The Mareeba Historic Society Inc.

The Mareeba Historic Society Inc. began on 28th July 1993, with our first meeting being attended by 13 people with apologies from 4 others.

For many years the group met at the same venue, the Mareeba Information and Support Centre at 199 Walsh Street, Mareeba. The Mareeba Shire Council then allowed the group the use of the old Country Women's Association Rooms in Byrnes Street.

We opened mainly at the weekends supplying not only historical data about the area but also tourist information as well. We did return to 199 Walsh Street for a few more months for meetings then back to Byrnes Street. From Byrnes Street we were given the use of a small pensioner cottage, only to be asked to move again to another cottage at 1 Lyons Street Mareeba.

On September 4th 2004 we moved to our current site at the Heritage Museum and Tourist Information Centre at Centenary Park on the main road, south from Mareeba.

The Society is forming the nucleus of an excellent research library and facilities as we are not only gathering as much of the past as possible, but we are collecting the present also, so that in the future documentation will be available for historians, genealogists and history-loving peoples.
